Taking Personal Ownership

One of the traits that can help you stand out in your career is taking personal ownership of every assignment. At one time I managed a group of system programmers in a disaster recovery function. This job required the staff to be available 24X7 in case a customer experienced an outage. Hurricanes, floods and fires always seemed to happen at night or on the weekends. When interviewing candidates for my team, I was very candid about the requirements of the job and insisted that the person have a discussion with current team members. Despite the rigors of the assignment, I never had a problem finding new staff members and frequently got inquiries about potential job openings. One of the reasons that people were attracted to the job was the obvious passion that was displayed by myself and my team. We took our clients success personally and were confident that no one could do the job better. We were not just bringing an application back online, we were saving a company's business. We took pride in the fact that we had never let a client fail in their recovery. We turned our jobs into a personal mission. When you have a reputation for taking ownership, you won't need to look for people to work on your projects. They will seek you out.
