Recession proof your career

We're starting to hear rumblings in the press about a possible recession in the U.S. This may cause you to wonder how your career may be affected. As the Wall St. Journal Online indicates, workers are afraid of losing their jobs and lack confidence in the overall job market. Clearly some industries such as housing, retail and travel would be hit hard if a recssion happens. Other industries such as healthcare or energy would probably not be affected.

How do you continue to thrive in your career during uncertain economic times? The Journal and The Brazen Careerist Blog offer some tips:

  1. Be a star performer. Apply the same level of energy to your current job as you did when trying to get promoted.
  2. Update your resume. Don't wait until you hear the announcement of layoffs. Take the time to get it current without the pressure which could cause you to omit key accomplishments or make errors.
  3. Search internally. Particularly in large corporations, layoffs are not done equally across multiple functions. There may be other departments that are actually growing and could use your skills.
  4. Get something done - Now! Most executives will try to keep those staff members who consistently meet or exceed objectives.
  5. Increase networking and mentoring. Reach out to your support system and nurture your relationships with them. They can be advocates for you if you need to look for a job later. Your coaches and mentors will help you keep focus on your career goals and not get side-tracked by what may or may not be happening in the economy.
