MBA's learn leadership from the One Minute Manager
According to the Wall St. Journal's Career Column, Ken Blanchard's current book Leading at a Higher Level will be used as source material for an Executive MBA Program at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Blanchard is best known as co-author of the One Minute Manager. Here are some key learning points that will be incorporated into the curriculum:
- Corporate success requires more than strategic leadership. It also requires operational leadership which is the ability to implement the strategies.
- Leaders should have a target and vision that transcends making money. Focus on taking care of your customers and motivating your employees.
- Treat your employees as owners and partners in the business. They will respond by going out of their way to support your customers.
- There are four stops on the leadership journey:
- Understanding yourself. You learn perspective.
- One-on One leadership. You learn how to build trust
- Team Leadership. You learn the complexities of leading more than one person
- Organizational Leadership. You learn how to create an organization that can achieve high performance.
Mr. Blanchard says that the biggest challenge facing leaders today is struggling with the realization that they are there to serve and not to be served. After working hard to achieve success, their egos come into play and the money, recognition and power moves up the hierarchy and away from the people closest to the customers.
