Make a decision
The Dot Connector Blog posts their Top 3 Leadership Development Tips.
- Make decisions
- Trust your instincts
- Allow yourself and your team to fail
While all of these are great tips, I believe that the ability to make decisions far outweighs the other two. The very act of making a decision and communicating it to your team and your executives identifies you as a person of action, someone who can get things done. I received some excellent advice from a mentor in this area. We were working on a new service offering, of which our company had no prior experience. We needed to document our initial processes but without guidelines my team was afraid of making a mistake on this very important effort. My mentor told me to "Put pen to paper" and create a draft based on the limited information I had. Making it a draft gave the team permission to critique and modify it. I made a decision on the direction of the work effort, but I allowed the team to structure the final work product. Doing this got them out of the paralysis of inaction. Are you or your team stuck on a project right now? Put pen to paper today and take some action.
