Leadership Strategy: Set the agenda

I just finished an interesting article by Paul Glen. The article was geared toward technical managers and the different stages of growth that he has observed them go through as they mature in their roles. In my experience, these stages are actually demonstrated by many people in leadership roles of all types whether they manage others or not. Take a look at this list and assess where you are on the scale. Stage 4 is what you should aspire to if you want to improve your career position.

  • Stage 1 - The translator. You think of yourself as merely a link in the flow of information. You accept assignments at face value and carry them out to the best of your ability.
  • Stage 2 - The defender. You view yourself as defender of your corner of the world. Your focus is on protecting your project from being cancelled, your team from being downsized, etc.
  • Stage 3 - The participant. You collaborate with peers and management, take positions and contribute to discussions on how to implement assignments.
  • Stage 4 - The agenda setter. You interpret facts and opinions and propose solutions to business problems. You help to build consensus within the organization on what should and shouldn't be on the business agenda.
